Ender's Game spoiler filled rant/commentary/other
i saw Ender’s Game today. And i wish i wasn’t familiar with the book. Because going in knowing everything that i did know ruined it for me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a pretty good movie. It’s fantastically accented with amazing CGI, almost flawless casting, and a great story line. But i’m frustrated by the way they completely ruined the characters and the all too important interpersonal relationships that make the book work so well.

Critique and SPOILERS ahead!

Characters:
1. Ender is six years old in the book when he’s taken into Battle School. In the movie, he’s an indeterminate age, though 10-15 would be an appropriate assumption based on age, actor, and behavior. In the book, it starts as though he’d been raised on Earth to learn and know everything about war. It’s a travesty, and it completely overlooks all of the important developmental stuff that young Ender must endure to become the man that the Colonel wants him to be.

2. Valentine and Peter Wiggin. Completely stepping away from Ender for the moment, let’s look at the complete lack of development on Valentine and Peter. They were the most important people in Ender’s life for six years. He respected and loved and feared them more than his parents. They were influential in teaching Ender his ruthlessness and his empathy. And the only reason that Ender was even born was to be a blend of the two, to be better than his elder siblings.

More than that though is what Valentine and Peter accomplished once Ender was recruited. They became powerful democratic figures instrumental in the post-war world that they inhabit after the defeat of the Formics. Valentine and Peter are polarizing and exciting and brilliant. And they’re the ones who decide Ender’s fate at the end of the book. Valentine and Peter Wigging.

3. Bean. Seriously? We had to completely destroy any hope for a timeline so we decided to make Bean the same age as Ender. And on top of that- we had to make sure that Bean wasn’t the antagonistic little genius shit that Card wrote him as to make him an appropriate complimentary character for Ender? Everything about Bean was wrong. Everything.

4. Petra. Why in the hell did they ruin Petra’s character? She went from sassy, sharpshooting, smart-mouthed ball busting, dominating figure to a meek love interest that was awkward and uncomfortable to watch. They ruined all of her overt strength in order to make her complementary to Ender, and that disgusts me.

5. Bernard.

6. Alai. Alai offered Ender an unfamiliar blessing in his native religion, a sign of respect and love. It was a gentle admission to their humanity in the midst of constant competition and warfare that the Battle School crafted for the boys. He kissed Ender’s cheek and whispered the blessing against his cheek- something that should be noted was shameful and carefully hidden beneath Hegemon rule. Something that we, the reader, understand but seven year old Ender was confused about. And it wasn’t until much later that Ender even discovered that it meant anything to Alai and to Ender himself.

Relationships:
1. Petra and Ender are not romantically linked. Petra and Ender should not be romantically linked. Petra and Ender should never have romance mentioned between them. Petra and Ender can be friends without having the threat of a romantic issues shoved between them. They did not need that.

Petra and Ender being romantically linked was disgustingly uncomfortable. Both actors looked weird being close to each other like they were. They were clumsy and it felt stilted and forced, and it makes the viewer uncomfortable to see. It’s sad, because the friendship between Ender and Petra in the book is one of the more formative ones after he leaves Valentine and Peter. She’s a teacher and a friend and a safe haven in the tempestuous storm that is Salamander Army until he can stand on his feet beneath the oppressive rule of Bonzo Madrid. Not to mention that Ender is 7-8 when he and Petra become close, and perhaps knowing that adds to the discomfort when it comes to the ugly and forced romance between Petra and Ender (which should never have been a thing).

2. The Wiggins. Ender is the Third. He is born with much stigma to parents who already have brilliant genetic offspring who, for polarizing behavioral traits, were unable to become what they needed to be for the IF. Peter was too coldly vicious. He didn’t care for whether he committed destructive violence or not. He delighted in it, reveled in his sadistic behaviors. Valentine on the other hand was the epitome of grace and compassion. She understood how to care for those around her and how to be gentle and forgiving. She’s the opposite of Peter.

And Ender, born third into their unique family is a mixture of both Peter and Valentine. He’s ruthless and vicious, but he doesn’t crave the violence that Peter does. He loves, and in loving he knows that he can be destructive. He recognizes the capacity for cruelty in himself and he actively avoids. And that compassion comes from Valentine. She taught him to love and to be good and sweet and empathetic. She taught him to see the difference in himself and Peter. And he loved her for it. She meant more to him than his mother. He meant more to Ender than his father.

When Ender is heartsick and exhausted at the ripe old age of 8-9, he is given the chance to recoup on Earth under the guise of preparations for Command School. But Ender is broken and worn down and ground into pieces. It isn’t his mother that comes to him; it isn’t his father or Peter. It’s Valentine. Valentine, who protected him from Peter at her own expense and taught him to love even when he had to be hard, who gave him everything and was the only balm for his pain.

Becoming Peter was Ender’s greatest fear. Becoming Valentine was his goal.

3. Graff and Ender. Graff’s characterization was pretty good. He was gruff and determined and angry and cruel, and Harrison Ford did a great job portraying that. What wasn’t done so well was Graff’s complete hands-on approach to Ender. He was far too visible and it was a gross violation of the distance that he needed to maintain to completely isolate Ender away from everyone and keep him from depending on others. He was too personal.

4. Ender and the cadets. Ender was never popular. He was feared and respected for his quick promotion and determination to not be a liability and working out with the other launchies. He was a terrifying potential when he humiliated older students. He was the top of his class, and a hacker. He was alone and terrified of what it would do to him, but unsure of how to break through his shyness to become friends with the other boys and girls. But that never stopped him from being the best that he could be.

Ender did not have real friends. He had partners and equals and students, but he never really developed friendships. The closest that he ever really got was with Bean (undersized, underfed, under qualified and brilliant). He opened up to the other boy and revealed his exhaustion and insecurities, the only one to really be given that privilege.

The other children in Battle School he had relationships with, but they were never close enough to be a confidant. They were important to him for what they taught him, but that was it. The movie portrayed them as friendly and open and welcoming. And that’s not even close to what happened.

Important other things:
1. Battle School was amazingly rendered between the reality of stage setting CGI. It was beautiful and breathtaking and completely, totally believable. But, what happened in Zero-G battles was so… disappointing. Ender’s evolution occurs just as much inside the Battle room as it does surrounded by the students in the halls. Ender’s evolution into the soldier that he would be was poignant and powerful and heartbreaking when one remembers that he’s coming of age in this brutal environment surrounded by other boys and girls who are just as violent and just as cruel.

2. Asa Butterfield’s acting. He was pouty and stiff and unconvincing.

3. Petra and Ender do not need a romantic relationship to be dynamic together.

4. Mother Dap was intimidating and terrifying and far too lacking the necessary compassion he was supposed to have for his little group of six year olds. Also, they didn’t even bring up Mother Dap.

5. They’re trying to convince us that the whole of the movie took place in the scope of a few weeks? Seriously? i’m willing to suspend belief for most science fiction, but there has to be a level of believability to maintain the integrity of the movie.

6. Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham was genius.

7. Let’s not even talk about the fact that Valentine is the reason that Ender never goes back to Earth. That she comes to him at Command School and together, the Wiggins travel the universe to an abandoned Formic world where he finds the queen’s larva (not outside his window in Command School, though the touch was nice with the rock formation that looked like the fallen castle in his psychological game), to protect him from the dangers of an Earth in Civil War and the tool he would become under Peter’s control.

Over all impressions are mixed. The music was, without a doubt, the best thing about the whole thing. The music was powerful and enhancing and emotive. It swelled and danced and trotted and lingered and was the perfect counterbalance.

The movie was lacking. If you one goes into it without reading the book, it’s a much more enjoyable experience. It’s exciting and fun and different. But having read the book, i was severely disappointed, though admittedly entertained.

Filter question
with permission from my big daddy:

he's curious to know what people would think about having a filter for unorthodox or unusual pairings that would actually work well. as it is, if you search for something... say, inu/sess, you're more than likely going to get more results that deal with them together, but not in the way you like. it'll be sesshoumaru as the seme. because people seem to have a hard time writing inuyasha as a seme to his older brother. *rolls eyes* whatever. come on people... it's called a switch! anyhow... he's curious to know if people would support getting a new filter search for the site...

and yeah, i'm kind of curious to know too...

his exact post:

okay, so a lot of you know that i tend to enjoy the unorthodox roles. inuxsessh, sasuita, duoxheero, duo/wufei, etc. its not that i dont enjoy the regular roles, but as a total switch, i like finding fics/art with the roles reversed.

so i have a quick question for you all.

do you have any idea how hard it is to find sasuita or inuxsessh?? using search engines is tedious and only retrieves about 10% of whats out there. its very unlikely to pick up anything from YG.

so im wondering how many people have also been dying for the ability to search by role as well as character. i realize it would be a bit of a drag at first, since one would have to go back through and specify, but (if the site has been coded efficiently) one should be able to disable to code that reposts things after theyve been edited, eliminating the spammage. perhaqps im the only one who has gone through it in their head at a coding level, but ive overhauled my own programs before, after 20,000 lines or more, so it doest seem too particularly unreasonable to me.
Hahahahaha! I support your cause, but good luck getting the mods to add that as a search criterian (some)

YES! gimme gimme gimme!!!!!!! (some)

Meh. I just stick to the clubs that have the roles I want. (several)

I don't care about the roles as long as it's hot (a few)
